Blue Creek Bad Bay, call name “Whiskey” placed second in the hour Dell Todd Open Derby Classic at Gladwin this spring. Whiskey is owned by Mike Coleman from Center Point, Iowa. Congratulations to Mike! Armstrong-Umbel Endurance ClassicTuesday, March 30th, 2010The Black Ash Grouse Dog Club is pleased to have successfully completed the second annual two-hour endurance Classic on the famed Marienville grounds in western PA. Joe is a long-time member of the club and along with secretary, Russ Richardson, feels this is an important stake for grouse dogs. 16 dogs were entered — many proved strong enough to finish the two hours though some had their opportunity cut short! Joe would like to thank all who continue to support the event by competing and/or through their financial support. Many thanks to this year’s judges, Frank LaNasa and Dave Hawk. The winner was English setter female, Texas Cherry Bomb, owned by Kevin Klein and handled by Scott Forman. Runner-Up laurels went to five-year-old pointer female, Pal O’ Mine owned by Chris Mathan and handled by Joe. ‘Fin’ has been with Joe since she was a puppy and has spent every winter since with Joe in Texas. She was unable to compete in last spring’s Classic due to illness. She put down a strong two hours with only two very short lapses which she recovered from and finished the two hours with strength to spare. She had a good stylish find on two grouse early in the brace and two unproductives—one a divided find where only the reporter heard the grouse leave from behind a group of white pines where both dogs were pointing. We are very proud of Fin!
Other Hard Driving dogs that competed were Hard Driving Lucy who was feeling a little too good on a crisp cool morning of the 5th brace and though she had a grouse find early on, it was far off on a limb and not seen by anyone but the scout. Lucy’s casts just kept getting bigger and bigger and Joe finally threw in the towel. He found her with the tracker with a mouth full of quills! Allegheny Maybaby and Hard Driving Rita, two young females, not yet three years old, started off strong but could not hold it together for the two hours. Maybel was picked up and Rita finished but with a stylish back to her credit.
Black Ash TrialMonday, August 3rd, 2009Two of Joe’s client’s placed their dogs in the Black Ash Trial this past Saturday. John Patterson pointer, Rusty was first is the Shooting Dog Qualifier and Chris Mathan’s Hard Driving Rita placed third in the Open Shooting Dog. Rita, who will be two later this August is now qualified to run in all open and amateur stakes.
Hard Driving Rita (Centerpiece x Hard Driving Bev) Chris Mathan, owner Hard Driving Bev Wins 2009 Ontario Grouse Championship!Sunday, March 15th, 2009
“By virtue of a strong, forward race and a stellar grouse find, 10 year old Hard Driving Bev bested a field of 62 to win the Ontario Grouse Championship for the second time in her career. Bev is now a 7 x Champion, 1 x R-U Championship, every one won on the king of game birds, the Ruffed Grouse! The 2009 championship was run on the State College, PA grounds and judged by Joe Cammisa and Craig Peters, both you have campaigned grouse champions themselves. 2008 Lake States Grouse ChampionshipWednesday, November 12th, 2008From Wisconsin, Joe travelled to Michigan for the Lake States Grouse Championship where ten year old (young!), Hard Driving Bev won Runner-Up laurels with a strong 5 grouse find performance in an 83 dog stake.
2008 National Amateur Grouse ChampionshipWednesday, October 29th, 2008Next on the agenda was the National Amateur Grouse Championship back in Augusta, WI where Montaro’s Rock won Runner-Up for his proud owner/handler Bill Henke. The strong, handsome setter had a mature and exciting race, handled with ease and was rewarded with a grouse find. Congratulations to Bill! Joe is exceptionally pleased with Rock’s continuous development as a field trial performer. Hard Driving Lucy (Shawn Thomas, owner) exhibited her dam’s knack for getting grouse handled. She finished the hour strong for Ben Mergens, owner of Lucy’s littermate, Hard Driving Louie.
Ben Mergens with Lucy Rick Simpson was in Wisconsin with Doug Kepler on a hunting trip so was there to run his setter, Tess. She did a fine job, getting a grouse and woodcock pointed and also finishing the hour strong.
Rick Simpson and Tess Thanks to all the owners who came out to Wisconsin to compete. And a big thanks to all who those who worked so hard to put on one of the best championships this fall. The National Amateur Grouse was well organized, well attended by amateurs from as far afield as Pennsylvania and Maine, and attentively and fairly judged by two experienced and respected dog men. It was a thoroughly great time!
RU Champion Montaro’s Rock 2008 Minnesota Grouse Championship & Reuel Henry Pietz Derby ClassicTuesday, October 28th, 2008Rock had a grouse find at the 58 minute mark in the Minnesota Grouse Championship but an eight minute absence cost him. Both Fin and Libby performed well on the ground with the experienced judges, Mitch Stapley and Bob Gove remarking on Libby’s exceptionally strong, classy and forward application. Unfortunately, neither managed to connect with a bird. All three dogs — Rock, Fin and Libby paid their way by claiming day money!
Pal’s Sea Pearl Joe fared better in the accompanying Reuel Henry Pietz Derby Classic with a first place win going to Toc (Platinum Pendulum, Larry Guild, owner) and second place going to Rita (Hard Driving Rita, Chris Mathan, owner). The derby, Toc and puppy, Rita are out Bev’s last two litters!
